Go get some culture thanks to the 2012 Settimana Della Cultura

The settimana della cultura, or 'week of culture', is here! For one week only, most state-run monuments, archaeological sites,  art galleries, museums and events are free!

But where to go? Well, in Rome, you could go on a guided visit to the Pantheon (click 'Pantheon' to be taken to the details), or a guided visit along the Via Appia on the 15th April. Once you're tired of the Romans (but not Rome), you could head to the Etruscan museum in the beautiful Villa Giulia (this is one of my favorite museums, I'm not sure why). There's also plenty of concerts and events throughout the city, such as at the Museo Nazionale degli Strumenti Musicali or the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia.

Sadly however, this year, for the first time as far as I can recall, the Colosseum and the Palatine hill will still cost the usual €18. In addition, the Capitoline Museum will have a reduced entry fee for the permanent collection and the Lux in Arcana exhibit of €3.50, while the MAXXI will only be free on April 17, 18 and 19.

The settimana della cultura is not only restricted to Rome, and there are lots of events going on throughout Lazio. For example, guided tours of Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola are free, while some normally sealed Etruscan tombs are to be opened in Tarquinia.

So what are you waiting for? Get planning. Take advantage. The full list of events (in Italian) can be found here, downloaded as a PDF here, and as a smartphone app here. Go get some free culture!
